Saturday November 6th struck a huge blow when my dear Choto Mama suddenly left us following a heart attack. It is a divine coincidence that my Dad (they were dear friends) had left us on the same month 35 years ago.
Two unexpected departures within 5 months. Earlier this year on June 8 Shankar Kaka left us. Two favorite Uncles passing away have made 2010 a forgettable year. They became unselfish mentors when Dad left me at a vulnerable age and I owe all that I have become today as a person to them.
Witnessing Choto Mama's life style as a hugely famous Tea Planter had made a lasting impression on my just out of school mind, years ago in Jalpaiguri (North Bengal's tea plantation zone) planting the first seeds of aspiration.
As years went by I realized that Mama was more about being a great human being than a successful planter.
His attitude and zest for life till the end (all of 85 years) could shame many youngsters.
He made his presence felt in the most subtle fashion making you feel wanted even when there was no direct communication for months.
Love, unadulterated affection with down to earth attitude was the secret of his invisible presence in the lives of anyone who was fortunate to be part of his orbit.
Shall always miss your hug but remain comforted by your eternal presence.
Good bye dear Mama.
On Saturday 4th September boarded a five seater (actually 6 with the pilot) airplane to travel to the famous Okavango Delta (Google to obtain more information on this interesting gift of nature to Botswana) out of Maun. The flight to the lodge where we headed was forty five minutes away flying at a maximum height of 6000 feet ASL.
This first time experience of sitting besides the pilot and flying in a small craft was both exciting and a bit scary, but the flight was smooth and no different from larger aircrafts. Level of confidence and enjoyment was higher during the return flight!
We landed on an air strip in the middle of no where and parked the craft to board the Land Rover waiting to transport us to a lodge.
The thirty minutes drive to the lodge (also known as wilderness camps) was the most eventful drive ever experienced. We literally drove over sand (Kalahari desert) and waist deep water along the route and over a clumsy looking wooden bridge in the middle of the jungle where you could spot variety of birds and animals.
The lodge was a gem in the middle of no where. The idea of experiencing African Safari cannot be better described unless one spends time at this lodge. Around midnight an elephant chose the immediate vicinity of our isolated cottage to look for food and it was a few hours of noisy activities before it decided to walk past the lagoon facing the cottage.
The cottages are mainly built from natural products collected from the forest and other eco-friendly concepts which included an open air shower (barely covered on three sides not to embarass your neighbour in the next far away cottage!!)with the fourth side open and facing the lagoon without a roof!!
Experienced nature at its best and company of guests from around the world.
On July 30 landed at Gaborone in Botswana with touch downs in Nairobi and Johannesburg after just over thirty eight months back home in Bangalore to take up an assignment. That Africa is an under rated continent becomes obvious no sooner than you step out of the aircraft at destination. The air is pure and oxygen rich. The airports are clean and not over crowded. The people are friendly, greeting and treating you as humans. Botswana is different from Zambia in many respects but the "African touch" remains the same.
My initial posting is 900 kms away from the capital at Maun where we arrived after ten hours drive on roads which are smooth as butter allowing you to touch top speed of 160 kms/hour on practically empty highways. To experience the best of both worlds the AFRICAN EXPERIENCE is ideal.
Late evening of 14th July a difficult decision to relocate in India taken three years ago has been more than justified by our loving daughter through her efforts to graduate with a satisfying performance, though our desire to be physically with her during the three years of academic pursuits could not be fulfilled fully as she spent most of the time away in a Mumbai college.
In retrospect – the distance away from home in Bangalore contributed towards her growth as a responsible person.
Mumbai of course gave her a wonderful exposure of college at Sophia and a pulsating city life in general. Despite criticism and cynicism ‘life in Mumbai’ when lived with discretion can be awesome.
It is wonderful to realize that her core group of friends all performed well while enjoying ‘college life’ to the hilt. Congratulations girls for creating such joy and fun while attaining the objective of good academic performance.
Let your friendship evolve as you separate to commence another journey.

On June 8 the Nandi clan along with other friends and family lost RAHUL KUMAR NANDI (Shankar Kaka to my branch of the family tree) to a nasty but pain less heart attack in a hotel room of Istanbul in Turkey while holidaying with spouse and four other couples from Singapore. Family, friends, fun and sharing joy was his trademark.
The void arising from his sudden departure is difficult to fathom. He meant so much to so many all across the world. The memories of wonderful moments he endlessly created during his seventy years three months physical stay amongst us will be cherished for long.
That a hugely successful person with a larger than large heart succumbed to his heart is symbolic in more ways than one for all those who had the good fortune of knowing him. Only a few great souls leave behind a legacy of love and humility not withstanding stunning personal achievements and fabulous material success. Good Bye Shankar Kaka. We will miss you for ever.
The Indian Railways have decided not to run trains during the night on tracks passing through Naxal affected areas following the tragic blowing up of a passenger train killing hundreds of innocent passengers. What a bizarre and meek surrender to terror.

The Minister of Railways is so busy with regional politics in Kolkata with civic polls that she has lost the authority and right to remain in office. The PM must sack her immediately and arrest her for dereliction of duty while initiating investigation in her and her party's role in patronizing with the Naxals for political manipulation in Singur and other areas to gain political mileage against West Bengal government.
She is alleging a conspiracy in the polls scheduled for 31st May instead of managing the ministry. Not a word of sympathy or regret has come from her filthy mouth for the thousands affected by a national tragedy. The dignity and prestige of INDIA cannot be bartered by an individual Minister's whims and lack of involvement in national duties.
It was only a matter of time as to where and when innocent passengers will have to pay with their lives to wake up the Government, Minister Patel(usually busy with counting his cash from 'beedi' sales/diversion of aircraft from scheduled flights for daughter's needs/lying for his party boss Sharad etc.) and Air India from deep slumber.
The sorry and shabby state of affairs in the airlines has for long been in the 'accident waiting to happen' mode.
The airlines does not deserve to exist any longer now that the fuse has run out with this tragic "killing" for which the top management along with the Minister and other corrupt officials should be tried in our courts for murder. All the statistics on its operations are pathetic and frightening.
The series of incidents involving the National carrier during the recent months has become an national shame portraying India as incompetent bunch of idiots unable to operate air travel safely.
Just shut down this 'white elephant' or sell it at salvage value to a private operator if the iconic "Maharaja" Brand can be revived. May the departed souls of innocents who died because of this criminal negligence rest in eternal peace.
May be it is relevant to discuss the burqa ban in India similar to that which some western countries have implemented/contemplating.

The Finals of the IPL was in progress while the 'crooks' representing BCCI were absent from the venue huddled in some hotel room (certainly enjoying free food and drinks) drafting 'show cause' notice served on Lalit Modi in the dead of night. This in itself reflects the criminal characteristics of the office bearers whose priority is not the game but the personal benefits accruing from cricket which they perceived to be under threat. Boycotting an event which is hosted by BCCI is an insult to the players and the nation's public at large.

Tharoor's profile** is misfit for the unsophisticated environment that dominates the Indian political arena. She has broken all records of decency by creating a ‘special security force’ to guard the hundreds of statues across the State at a cost of 200 crores per annum. The police and other agencies are not enough for protecting her statues?
Thousands of crores have been spent and continues to be spent to build bigger than life size personal statues along with other garish show of wealth and power. The thousand Rupee currency notes garlands require the support of six men to hold over her torso. The minimum value of these garlands runs into over two crores each!! When and how will such inhuman characters quit the political stage? This woman is so self obsessed that it borders on lunacy. Lunatics cannot hold office of Chief Minister aspiring to be Prime Minister!!
Back from Kolkata after a leisure trip. It was a spur-of-the-moment travel without fixed itinerary on an open ticket that really packed in a lot of fun and joy with family and friends. The laid back life style which Kolkata still manages to portray is a welcome change from the rat race environment we have unwittingly adopted. You can still see people playing carom on the pavement under a bright light energized by electricity ‘stolen’ from the nearest lamp post and another group busy playing cards squatting under some tree around the bend of a busy junction. The ‘adda’ with famous earthen cups of tea remain familiar land mark in most localities. The chaos at Kalighat mandir continues. The dilapidated dirty looking Ambassador taxis ply (though with fewer Sardarjis) at their rattling best. The buses remain filthy and dented. The autos though, have got a face lift – thanks to strict implementation of emission norms to reduce carbon footprint. An important discovery is you can spot sparrows in the city!! This validates the ‘human element’ that still exists in Kolkata. Personal high point was gorging on the endless variety of fish lovingly cooked by loved ones. Certainly a rejuvenating trip in spite of the hot and sticky summer time day temperature!! The illusion of day to day life being 'on hold' relative to other metros is very refreshing.
The sham of breast thumping Indian politicians claim to 'SECULARISM' has been exposed by the failure of the government to assure safety to an Indian aged 95 years. It is a shame that politics and fundamentalism in the name of democratic rights has forced an iconic (ex)Indian to surrender citizenship of the country which is his birth right. The man who put India on the world art map was humiliated and threatened of arrest based on distorted facts for over three years. The national shame is compounded by the fact that the politics of manipulation is being played out to woo the old man to change his mind. It is too little too late to salvage the Indian image. What is the difference between the Talibans and our own brand of "HINDU" terror?

The dastardly terror strike, by cowards unfit even to be described as wild animals, at the German Bakery in Pune has snuffed out the lives of three bright and beautifulyoungsters along with other dead and many more injured. The enormity of the three wasted human lives is heart wrenching as it involved three friends who were studying in Pune scheduled to board the next morning’s flight for home in Kolkata. Amongst this trio were two siblings - a boy aged 24 and his sister of 19. The brother sister duo were good students and also excelled in sports. The third was another 24 year girl. All three were mates from school days. They were away from the comfort of their Kolkata homes to pursue their dreams in the education capital of India!! The serious question that arises from this unimaginable tragedy is HOW SAFE ARE WE? The obvious answer is WE ARE AT THE MERCY OF TERRORISTS AND WILL REMAIN UNSAFE ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE IN INDIA UNLESS THE PATHETIC QUALITY OF GOVERNANCE DRASTICALLY CHANGES. Firm leadership coupled with bipartisan unity to destroy terror is the one and only option available to tackle the menace emanating from a sick and dying neighbor. Hate and distorted facts based on shadow boxing with an imaginary enemy for over 60 years has converted Pakistan into a cesspool of bearded inhuman gun toting fanatics willing to maim and kill in the name of religion. USA and other Western nations have repeatedly created ‘Frankensteins’ in troubled waters to suit their limited self interest in the region. Pakistan has negotiated to remain a Client State manipulating the mostly stupid gullible white men by manufacturing sob stories based on falsehood and half truths in its compulsive need to equate itself with India. That India is not the real enemy in this imaginary equation has got to be proven wrong by bold and firm action on a war footing by our spineless political leadership setting aside the narrow politics of “VOTE BANKS” that has systematically eroded our strength as a nation capable and willing to defend its citizens. MAY THE DEPARTED SOULS REST IN PEACE.
Till such time as India shows patience and does not display its mite as a strong united nation our errant neighbor will continue to treat India as a soft target to initiate terror attacks by clandestine means. It is high time Pakistan is exposed of its dubious double crossing tactics by hitting them really hard militarily. Their smooth talking manipulation of the US/UK and other nations on the international forum keeps them afloat as a "failed state" by depicting India as 'ENEMY NUMBER ONE' while begging for arms and dollars which are mostly diverted to create hate and paranoia by its State Agency ISI as the guiding force to strike India from the back while hiding behind a veil of duplicity and scorn. We cannot and should not remain reactive any more but become robustly proactive while dealing with a rogue state in the neighborhood. Destroy their terror cells and starve their supply lines may be even dry up their water resources (of which we are falsely accused any way?) Show of strength and resolve has become inevitable to beat the hell out of Pakistan.
The ugly statements being made by the ‘Thakeray Mafia’ of Bombay (read that as Mumbai – if you are scared?) are disgusting. More importantly it is a dangerous threat to Indians including the ‘Marathi Manoos’ in view of the evident break down of governance being explored by self appointed leaders. Democracy cannot exist with intolerance unless rule of law is swiftly imposed. The Bals/Udhavs/Rajs and their like have been treated with fear by the State for far too long. This soft attitude for political expediency by successive governments in Maharashtra has given their followers a sense of invincibility which has now reached an alarming level, interfering with the freedom of citizens guaranteed by our Constitution. Udhav has the audacity of calling the Home Minister of India on national TV as the HM of Pakistan!! and warning other law abiding citizens to restrict themselves within domains dictated by him while showing absolute disrespect for our democratic environment. It is ironic that he claims his right to abuse any one and every one under the same democratic space guaranteed by the Constitution!! Blatant ridicule of the rule of law cannot be allowed to continue and culprits must be punished without fear or favour. May be “Pink Chaddi” type campaign needs to be launched as “Orange Chaddi” considering the mockery being made by Bal wearing orange robes to project himself as a sanyasi akin to a snarling wolf in sheep’s clothing!!
Official member of the “Senior Citizens Club” – entitled to enjoy certain age based privileges which accrue to Indian citizens!! The journey so far has been fantastic with few road bumps and some unexpected turns mixed with many joyous peaks. The flow of greetings from midnight urges me to want to acknowledge Thakur’s immense Blessings along with the love and support of all those who touched my life in a million different ways. I feel blessed to have so much love from relatives, friends, and acquaintances. In case you are not aware of who is swearing in public at whom, they are the ‘WHO’S WHO’ of Indian leadership entrusted with governance - Gowda is the perpetual political manipulator and Yeddyurappa is the current CM of BJP led government in the state of Karnataka.
Gowda's claim to fame is that he once lost his way in the maze of political manipulation and by default became Prime Minister of India for a few months. Since then he has graduated to shameless display of greed for power and demand for respect by flaunting his undeserved qualification of "Ex-PM". (We happen to pay for this person's security based on the Ex-Status!!)
If at all one were to look for a classic example of a person without moral values in public life the prize for it will go hands down to Deve Gowda.
Incidentally he has the distinction of siring a distinguished line of sons who are as (un)worthy if not more than "Paa" in the dirty political arena. Jungle law has been efficiently 'downloaded' to the family members.
One of his unworthy sons has already obtained the qualification of "Ex- CM' to flaunt his style of greed for power and desire to stay in the limelight. This political beast has come to his father's rescue trying to justify the 'bastardly' outburst as a case of - “He had no choice but to use the language. He was angry as injustice is being done to farmers etc……..” – Incidentally ‘Daddy’ was so angry that the English expletive was reinforced by ‘gaali’ in his mother tongue which translates to s.o.b.!! Can you imagine the audacity this attitude displays in our politicians?
It is the existence of such undignified persons in public life that restricts India’s potential to greatness. We need reforms to disqualify persons without minimum sense of decorum from becoming visible in public domain. Pedigree checks similar to determining a good race horse or a pet dog must become mandatory to hold public office.
The democratic space made available to “Netas” is systematically abused by manipulative individuals to fulfill their personal agendas at the cost of development and solving real problems.
The apparent provocation of angry “Papa” is a long standing war of wits related to completion of an important developmental infrastructure project in the roads sector. The “Ex-PM/CM” considers himself above the law and indulges in cheap political circus often defying court orders to occupy public space. No real issues are involved. Drama and abusive language is resorted to by an elderly person disrespecting all norms of decency to instigate unsuspecting deprived citizens from their own future in the benefits of development. I strongly suspect that the promoters of this project did not grease the family's dirty palms is what Ex-PM is angry about!!
The government must and should punish such disruptive elements and ban them from creating nuisance which involves diverting tax payer funds to manage such self indulging disturbances disguised as public service.
As a citizen I’m outraged and want Gowda and his family punished for disrespecting and abusing the Indian Constitution under which the Chief Minister of Karnataka holds office.
